COULD HIDDEN FOOD ALLERGIES BE CAUSING YOUR MIGRAINES?  by

 Tiffane Coe
10/9/2008 at 18:39
Today we’re going to talk about hidden food allergies. The first thing that it is important to understand is that there are different types of reactions to foods that we are allergic to. The most commonly understood and easily detected reaction is called a type 1 reaction or IgE reaction. With this type of reaction it is very easy to detect an allergy to a particular food. The symptoms of a Type 1 reaction are swelling of the throat, hives and an anaphylaxis type of reaction, a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic response. We are not focusing on that today because these allergies are very easily detected.

The type of allergy I want to talk to you about would more likely fall into the category of food sensitivities which are the result of an entirely different immuno/ biological process altogether. One that instead of being an immediate reaction may take hours or even days to actually become apparent. This is one of the reasons that most people have trouble recognizing the relationship between the symptoms that they are experiencing with something that they ate days prior (type 3 or type 4 reactions), even though type 3 and type 4 reactions are much more common. In fact only 5 percent of the population is affected by the type 1 so that means that most are affected by the type 3 or 4 allergy which is the "hidden" type.

How do you recognize whether or not you or someone you know could be experiencing a ...

TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH FOOD ALLERGIES  by

 Willhelm Williams
10/9/2008 at 18:39
Coping with allergies as an adult is not difficult, but handling allergies in children, particularly small ones is quite a daunting task. Children are often prone to food allergies and it is also difficult to expect them to resist foods that other children in school or siblings at home are eating.

Handling the problem of food allergy in a child will require the child’s participation as well, because as he grows older, he is increasingly away from parental supervision and vigil. Therefore it becomes important to explain everything to the child, that is, the types of food he is allergic to, the result of eating those foods, how they react inside his body, and to make it easier, give examples of others with food allergies. The child has to be told never to eat those foods, even while sharing snacks and goodies with friends at school. The early pre-school and elementary years in school are difficult, as children of that age tend to forget. The younger the child, the more often he must be reminded about his allergy, as he grows older, his repeatedly hearing the same warning would make him naturally cautious. Once he is old enough he will even be able to read food labels and identify the foods he is allergic to. Eventually it becomes a habit to ask if the food contains nuts or wheat or whatever the child is allergic to.

Food allergies in children cannot just be handled by parents and the child alone. It is ...

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF FOOD ALLERGY CAN BE RISKY FOR CHILDREN  by

 Navneet Brar
10/9/2008 at 18:38
Recent researches have proved that the lack of knowledge of food allergy among the public can trigger a deep impact on the health of the children who suffer from food allergy. The misconceptions about food allergy that is widely prevalent among the masses often proof to be the stumbling blocks for parents, despite having a good amount of knowledge about allergy.

According to a research, led by Ruchi Gupta, MD MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Children Memorial Research Center, it was found that the diagnosis and advice of the physicians differed widely apart from ruling out the misconceptions that challenges the knowledge of the parents.

It was found that parents whose children are allergic to food, despite having a strong knowledge about allergies, worry about the eating habits of their children. And as a result of which the parents suffer from anxiety. The stress and anxiety of the parents have reached such a level that it has began to have a negative impact on their relationships, work and marriage as well.

There is a wide gap between the physicians and the general public as far as the understanding of the allergies are concerned. The general public has their own interpretations of the symptoms that trigger food allergies. What most of the public does is that they either overlook the occurrence of allergy or diagnose it themselves. On the other hand the physicians, has a different approach in diagnosing allergies and the advice they give on ...

5 REASONS TO USE A HEPA AIR PURIFIER FOR HAY FEVER  by

 Debbie Davis
10/9/2008 at 18:37
If you suffer from hay fever, the offending pollen season surely fills you with dread, and your medicine cabinet is probably armed and ready to help you dry up any symptoms at the first sign of a reaction. But wouldn’t it be nice to all but eliminate the source rather than just treat the symptoms of your hay fever? Here are 5 reasons why using an air purifier will give you sustained relief from hay fever all year round.

1. Removes Airborne Pollen

A high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) air purifier will remove airborne pollen as small as .3 microns (a micron = one millionth of a meter) from the air in your home or office. You need to filter your air to this degree because regardless of how careful you are during pollen season, some pollen is going to come into your home through open doors, on your clothes, your pets, and packages that you bring in from the outside.

2. Removes All Types of Pollen

Whether your hay fever is triggered by tree pollen in the spring, grasses in the summer, weeds in the fall, or mold and mildew in the winter, filtering your air with an effective cleaner will decrease your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

3. Prevents a Build-up

Designed to run 24 hours every day, a HEPA air purifier will prevent pollen from accumulating to such a high level that it causes sneezing, watery eyes, congestion, scratchy throat, sinus infection and all the other symptoms hay fever can trigger.

UNDERSTANDING ALLERGIES  by

 Rex Magnum
4/24/2008 at 10:57
More than 20% of the adults and children in the United States are affected by allergies, bringing the total to millions being affected yearly. Depending on the source of the reaction, allergies can affect people at different seasons as well as different times of their lives.

Numerous sources can cause people to suffer with an allergic reaction. Some of the common sources of allergies include: pollen, mold, dust mites, and food. If you suspect that you may have an allergy, your doctor may be able to find out exactly what you are allergic to and the best treatment for you.

Since allergies can be inherited, you may suffer from them if either parent has had them. But, just because your mother’s allergy is dust, does not mean that your allergy will also be dust. The allergy you receive may take a different form, you may be allergic to mold.

The genetic link is whether you develop an allergy or not, due to your parent’s history. Having a reaction to a certain substance may indeed just be because your immune system is weak. People may have a weak immune system due to infection or pregnancy.

What is an allergy?

If your body’s immune system is reacting unusually to a foreign substance, you may be experiencing an allergy. Coming in contact with mold or pollen will trigger the immune system and it will behave as though these substances are harmful. Results from this contact may include: watery eyes, hives, itching, and trouble breathing.

During more intense reactions, you ...

WHAT IS A GLUTEN ALLERGY?  by

 Rex Magnum
4/24/2008 at 10:57
In grains such as wheat, rye, barley, and low level oats, there is a rubbery protein which is called gluten. This is the binder in bread. You would notice it in breads and other baked goods.

Although these grains contain gluten, they also contain other proteins that cause other allergies as well.

The four primary proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley include: albumin, globulin, gliadin, and gluetnin, better known as gluten. Gluten allergy can vary from person to person but most will have these symptoms: hives, swelling, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or asthma.

If the person is highly sensitive to gluten allergy, the symptoms could be life-threatening.

A diagnosis is quite easy, if the person has a reaction after eating wheat or wheat products. The challenge is that so many foods we eat contain wheat and it becomes increasingly difficult to determine which one gave the problem.

A trained allergist would need to do a skin prick test to better determine the gluten allergy problem. If the reaction is severe, the solution may involve elimination of the by products from the diet. If the gluten allergy is minor, the amount of wheat may be watched, allergy medication and shots taken to help the person with the gluten allergy.

If the person with the gluten allergy is a child, chances are this will be outgrown. Children’s symptoms for this may include: abdominal distension growth, abnormal stools, irritability, poor muscle tone, and wasting of the muscles. In the adult the allergy may be shown as significant weight ...

AIR PURIFIER FOR HAY FEVER  by

 Debbie Davis
4/24/2008 at 10:56
If you are suffering from burning eyes, a runny nose, a dull headache or all of the above due to pollen related hay fever, a high efficiency particle arresting air purifier should be in your future. A high efficiency particle arresting or HEPA air purifier can relieve your hay fever symptoms by removing the pollen and other hay fever triggers from your indoor air. Here are 4 features to choose when selecting a HEPA air purifier to help with you manage your hay fever forever.

* Select an air purifier that can remove pollutants at least as small as .3 microns in size. This will insure that your air purifier is effective in removing the pollen as well as dust, dust mites and other pollutants that can also contribute to triggering hay fever symptoms.

* Choose an air purifier that is designed to run quietly and economically 24 hours a day. Letting the air purifier work 24 hours means that pollen and other pollutants will be constantly removed from your air creating a safe haven that you can count on to be free of pollutants that trigger your hay fever.

* Opt for a low maintenance air purifier. Before investing in an air purifier, find out how often the filter needs to be changed and what the filter changing procedure is. Compare your lifestyle with the time involved to change the filter, and make sure the two are a good match ...

SYMPTOMS OF SINUS INFECTION  by

 Mike Herrington
4/24/2008 at 10:55
While growing up the grammar school nurse use to tell me that I had a cold. I believed in the nurse and I just kept her diagnosis to myself. I would always grab several pieces of tissue before going to school and clear up the nasal drainage throughout the day.

By the age of 10, I started to question what the nurse had told me. "How could a cold last so long and happen so often?" So I decided to pay a visit to the junior high school nurse. She told me that I had allergies and wrote a note to my parents mentioning that I needed to take some kind of over the counter allergy medicine.

My parents had no clue about allergy medicine. They ended up giving me something that made me drowsy throughout the day. I could recall that my eighth grade teacher put me aside and asked me if I was consuming illegal drugs and wanted to talk to my parents.

That’s how my past was and I still continue to suffer from allergies and anything sinus related, including sinus infections. There are 2 kinds of sinus infection and they have symptoms that are similar to, or could be aggravated by allergies. These 2 are called acute and chronic.

Here’s the difference:

Symptoms of Acute Sinus Infection

* Fever is common
* Nasal discharge
* Mucus drainage down the back of the throat
* Nasal congestion

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD HAS A FOOD ALLERGY  by

 Frank Senturi
2/12/2008 at 11:29
Nobody likes battling with allergies. While these can be extremely irritating, allergy sufferers have it even worse if they are allergic to foods and food by products. It is especially hard for parents to know what types of food allergies their children have developed. Usually, by the time parents find out, their child has already experienced a bad allergic reaction.

Food allergies, as opposed to food sensitivities, occur in the immune system. A true allergy to a food usually results in a violent bodily reaction caused by the immune system attacking the offending protein as it gets into the body and the bloodstream. This reaction can at times lead even to the death of the person afflicted with this condition.

The antibody, IgE (Immunoglobulin E) is found in the immune system. This antibody goes right to action by bonding with the protein of the food that an individual is allergic to. When these IgE proteins build up, the body releases chemicals that cause a variety of reactions. These include: itching, fever, swelling, trouble breathing, vomiting and may even cause certain body system functions to shut down.

Food allergies are usually detected before a child reaches three years old. While this is normally the case, many children develop allergies to food later when they are exposed to a wider variety of foods.

The most commonly encountered food allergens include wheat, milk, nuts, soy, and eggs. In fact, these foods constitute over ninety percent of the allergies that children react to.

There is a big difference between ...

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CORN ALLERGIES  by

 Samuel Alby
2/12/2008 at 11:28
A small percentage of the population has an allergic reaction to corn when it is consumed, and the symptoms can vary from mild to fatal. In this article we look at everything you need to know about corn allergy.

If you suffer from corn allergy it means that you have a contacts allergy, also known as allergy type 1. Seafood and soy are also in this group to name but a couple. The allergy occurs as a result of the immune system reacting to the proteins within corn in the wrong way, a more detailed explanation follows.

This is how the whole process occurs. Once corn has been consumed the immune system is set off by the proteins within the corn. For some unknown reason the immune system sees these proteins as harmful foreign bodies and attacks them by using histamines and antibodies.

The symptoms of the allergy are caused by the chemicals that the immune system has released to fight the so called harmful foreign body. If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffer from corn allergy it is very important that you visit your doctor. He or she will be able to carry out tests that will allow him or her to properly diagnose your condition. Your doctor will then be able to recommend the best treatment option depending on how severe your allergy is, this will be discussed later on in the article.

The symptoms of an allergic reaction to corn include diarrhea, hives, watery eyes, skin rashes, and ...

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOY ALLERGIES REVEALED!  by

 Samuel Alby
2/12/2008 at 11:27
People who suffer from this type of allergy are said to suffer from contact allergies, these are known as allergies type1 , seafood also comes under this group. Research has uncovered the fact that there are 16 proteins in soy that have the ability to cause an allergic reaction, however scientists are still not sure which of these proteins are more allergenic than the other. Although it is common for someone to suffer from a soy allergy, this has done nothing to tarnish its status as a very popular health food.

So how does soy cause an allergic reaction? This is how the allergic reaction occurs, when soy is consumed the proteins within it set off an allergic reaction in the immune system. This happens because the immune system sees these proteins as harmful and it attacks them by using antibodies and histamines, it is these chemicals that are released by the body that cause the symptoms of a soy allergy.

The reason why the immune system sees soy as harmful in someone who is allergic to soy is not known, however o going research is being carried in order to establish the reason. The symptoms that occur as a result of a soy allergy can range from minor to life threatening, depending on how badly an individual reacts to his or her soy allergy. The rate at which these symptoms occur can be within minutes of consuming soy, although in many cases it can take a few hours to occur.

MILK ALLERGY SYMPTOMS  by

 Samuel Alby
2/12/2008 at 11:26
Some of the most common allergy symptoms are those that occur as a result of consuming milk, milk allergy symptoms affect millions of people worldwide. In this article we take a closer look at these symptoms, and how they can be treated.

The problem with milk allergies is that fact that milk is an ingredient in so many foods, this makes coming into contact with it an almost unavoidable task. For some people simply eating a bar of chocolate which contains milk derivatives in the ingredients can cause an allergic reaction, and the symptoms can cause great discomfort.

Some of the most common symptoms that occur as a result of milk allergy include bloating, gas, diarrhea, hives, watery eyes, skin rashes, acne, and nausea amongst several others. This allergy can actually aggravate certain conditions such as asthma, eczema and acne, making them worse. It has also been noted that it can cause hyperactivity in some children. Some people suffer from milk allergy symptoms but don’t even realize, because in their case the symptoms are usually minor, i.e. gas.

So what is the cause of milk allergy symptoms? Well one of the common causes is lactose. This is an ingredient in milk that is also known as milk sugar. Many people who suffer from the symptoms are actually lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is caused by the lack of an enzyme called lactase that breaks down lactose during digestion. Approximately 7 out of 10 people lack this enzyme, particularly people who are of African decent.

There is nothing sweeter than that first wisp of spring air wafting through an open window or the first time you hear the crackle of fall leaves under your feet. Unfortunately, for more than 35 million Americans, these simple pleasures have come to herald another season of discomfort due to allergies.

I’m sure most of you are well versed in prescription and over-the-counter options that promise relief in handy 12-hour increments. If you have been battling allergies for years, you have probably worked your way through many of these drugs, yet you remain unsatisfied. That is because pharmaceutical allergy medications cause side effects, like drowsiness and dry mouth that can sometimes be as unpleasant as the actual allergies!

Relief Is Right Under Your Nose

If you can’t bear the thought of yet another season of popping expensive pills and spending all your time indoors, there is hope. There is a wide array of natural remedies for allergy symptoms and so are right in your own pantry.

The first one is simple table salt. Using a device called a neti pot that looks like a genie’s lamp you can flush out your nasal passages twice a day with a saltwater solution. This will clear out any pollen and thin the mucous so you feel clearer. You can also buy a prepared saline nasal spray, which is basically the same thing.

NO NUTS, NO EGGS PLEASE  by

 Emma Miles
2/12/2008 at 11:25
With food allergies on the rise and a 300% increase of anaphylaxis related hospital admissions in the last three years in Victoria alone, we really do have to become more allergy aware.

My daughter who is allergic to nuts and eggs has to have a strict nut free and egg free diet. Now lets get this clear, this means absolutely no nuts, particularly no peanuts as these nuts are loaded with the dangerous allergen. Even trace amounts of nuts may cause a reaction so choosing her food can be very tricky. I find it difficult to shop for completely nut free and egg free products. I spend so long at the supermarket or grocery store reading product labels that if I think of all the time that I have spent doing this I could have actually made the things from scratch at home.

The egg replacer product "No Egg" from Orgran is my life saver. Using this product my daughter is allowed to lead a relatively "normal" life. Every birthday party seems to be a living nightmare, well used to be anyway. Most of my friends now know that she is not allowed to have nuts or eggs around. I am the official cake maker for parties and if I am not making the main birthday cake I am always making cupcakes for her to eat instead of the main birthday cake (if I haven’t made it). We attended a pirate party last weekend, as usual I provided 20 egg free cupcakes ...

CAN ADULTS DEVELOP FOOD ALLERGIES  by

 Willhelm Williams
2/12/2008 at 11:24
Can adults develop food allergies or not are distinguished more so by their symptoms. A food allergy only affects one to two percent of the adult population and the symptoms are not typical to those who simply have food intolerance. It is highly unlikely that you would develop a food allergy during your adulthood as this an allergy that is detected in your early childhood; normally, from eating an allergen and developing symptoms, or the person is genetically disposed to a particular food allergy. A food allergy is also defined as hypersensitivity, which, when a person ingests the allergen for the food which you are allergic too, the immune system kicks into full gear and responds accordingly with a variety of different symptoms.

Food Intolerance versus Food Allergy

Whether you are simply unable to tolerate certain foods or liquids versus a person who is allergic to a certain food is sometimes not properly diagnosed. Can adults develop food allergies are not as likely, as you are born with the food intolerance. A food allergy is far more complex of a disorder, as food intolerance is generally masked by similar symptoms of an allergy. Food intolerance inside your body mimics a food allergy as the intolerance builds up toxic byproducts and histamine, which in turn can lead you to believe you are actually allergic to a food, but simply have the intolerance to.

Common Reactions

Some of the more common allergic reactions vary in their numbers and severity working their way up through the digestive ...

COMMON TYPES OF ALLERGIES TO WATCH OUT FOR  by

 Willhelm Williams
2/12/2008 at 11:23
If you think you are prone to having allergic reactions to certain things, chances are you may really be very sensitive to many types of allergens. The problem is, allergens can be anywhere and everywhere, and it doesn’t help that our world has become teeming with noxious substances to add to other, more natural causes of allergies. Here are just a few types of allergies based on their causes:

Natural Causes of Allergies

There are a lot of microscopic organisms in the air we breathe that may trigger allergic reactions. You can start in your own house. Carpets, upholstery, curtains, pillows, and mattresses are usual breeding grounds of dust mites. If the simple task of dusting surfaces or fluffing pillows can easily start you sneezing and make your eyes itch, then you may be extremely sensitive to dust mites. Another household problem that can lead to allergy and sickness is mold. It thrives in warm and humid places, usually in dirty bathrooms and basements with little ventilation. The spores of mold are likewise airborne like dust particles, so it’s very important to have all your rooms cleaned up regularly to avoid unwanted health problems.

Other natural causes of allergies are pollen and animal dander. Insect bites and stings - particularly by bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants - can be very harmful too if you are allergic. If you find yourself experiencing allergic symptoms during certain times of the year, then you may be suffering from seasonal allergies. Hay fever is especially common ...

WINTER ALLERGIES - WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THEM?  by

 Alexander Newell
2/12/2008 at 11:22
Mostly we think of spring as the Allergy Season. Often we can see clouds of pollen and blossom blowing in the wind. So it comes as a shock to learn that many allergy sufferers have an awful time in the winter.

Allergies can be triggered by many different things; pollen from flowers and trees are often responsible but for the Winter Allergy sufferer household mould is often to blame.

After all in the winter we have the windows and doors sealed to prevent cold wind and rain chilling us. But the result of sealing the house is the rise of humidity which is exactly what mould needs to grow.

Doctors have advised that keeping the humidity below 35% helps not just to inhibit mould but dust mites too.

Dust mites are tiny animals, rather like ticks. They leave their droppings wherever they go-and it is their droppings that cause our allergic reactions. Every animal has to eat and dust mites eat the tiny fragments of human skin that fall off us everyday. If you are allergic to these critters you may find that measures such as using dust-proof bedding covers very helpful. Another standard measure is to diminish the number of "dust traps" such as carpets and rugs, especially in the bedroom. This is especially important for asthma sufferers.

Also in the winter we may be in contact with our pets for longer and it is sad but true that banning Fido or Tibbles from the bedroom is essential in the case of a pet ...

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT ALLERGY TREATMENT  by

 Ras Reed
2/12/2008 at 11:22
Lots of people are afflicted with allergy to different types of objects. Some people are allergic to odors, fumes and smoke, but many others are allergic to foods like shellfish and nuts. Environmental allergens are the former while the latter are known as food allergens. The victims always become uncomfortable whenever they come in contact with any of these objects. Sneezing, vomiting and abdominal pain are some of the discomfort the victim often experience. Some of these reactions do happen suddenly and death may be the result in some instances if no immediate treatment is found quickly. How best can you treat environmental and food allergens?

The best way to solve the problem of food allergens is to know the food that is responsible for the allergic reaction. Do not be afraid yet. This may mean that you will have to take a look at the food you’ve consumed of late. Did you alter your food? You should immediately remove the food from your list once you’ve discovered that it is the one causing the problem. You must not treat this with levity.

Whenever possible, it is advisable to stay away from the food as much as possible. Unlike their food counterpart, environmental allergens are not easy to deal with. This is because of the tricky nature of environmental allergens. Skin allergy testing is the best solution for environmental allergens.Allergy treatment is then prescribed based on the level of reaction at hand.

Furthermore, many people are not aware that it is not everyone ...
