NEW TREATMENT FOR RUPTURED DISC  by

 Cindy Teruya
4/24/2008 at 11:15
Those who suffer from acute back pain due to a ruptured disc need to find relief. People often try to avoid getting traditional open or fusion back surgery because in the past, this method of back surgery was known for being painful and requiring long recovery times. Open back surgeries and fusion surgeries also only provide lasting relief in less than 50% of cases. New treatments are now available that can help fix ruptured discs and relieve the back pain.

New minimally invasive techniques can be used to relieve the pain and fix the problem of a ruptured intervertbral disc. The spine is made up of vertebral bones and discs that are separated with ligaments and tissue. As people age, they often lose some of the moisture in the tissue that separates the discs. The result can be ruptured discs that slip out of place. Sometimes the disc causes pain when it presses on nerve roots exiting the spinal cord. In the past, the treatment for ruptured discs involved open back surgery. In this highly invasive procedure, a large incision was employed during surgery. As a result, the post-operative recovery time was long and painful. Fortunately, there are new arthroscopic techniques that are much less invasive and less painful. Surgeons who practice these techniques can provide almost instant relief from back pain with minimal recovery time, minimal scarring and minimal blood loss..

The arthroscopic method used to treat a ruptured disc involves making a small incision in the back, usually no larger ...

LOWER BACK PAIN - GOOD POSTURE IS THE KEY TO RELIEF  by

 Chris Moheno
4/24/2008 at 11:15
If you suffer from chronic back pain then there are several things you can do to prevent additional problems and minimize the amount of pain caused in your back. Many of the things you need to be aware of are things like standing, sitting, lifting, exercise, and the way you sleep.

Standing properly can make a big difference when you are trying to prevent lower back pain. You should always stand upright and your chest should be forward. Always hold your head up and keep your shoulders straight. It is important to tuck your hips in and evenly distribute your weight with your feet. During periods that you have to stand for long durations of time you should try not to stand in the same position for the entire time you remain standing. It is important to change positions often when you are standing for long periods. One thing you can do is rest a foot on a stool or a bench and then switch positions. Spending hours upon hours on your feet is a recipe for serious back problems.

Most people spend the majority of their day sitting in the same chair while they are at work. You should sit for as little periods as possible. It is hard to do this for many people with jobs that require them to be seated at their desk. What you need to do if you are stuck at a desk is stand and take small strolls as much as possible. While you are ...

SOLVING BULGING DISC PROBLEMS  by

 Cindy Teruya
4/24/2008 at 11:14
Many back problems are actually caused by bulging discs. A bulging disc is a common back problem for adults of all ages. Many people have this condition yet may be unaware of it. Bulging intervertebral discs can be a source of significant pain. The spine is made up of a series of bones separated by spongy intervertebral discs supported by ligaments. As the body ages the ligaments in the spine tend to wear down or shift. Bulging discs occur when the discs pop out from their original location.

A bulging disc becomes painful when it protrudes into the spinal canal area. When it rubs on other parts of the spine or on the nerve roots exiting the spine, it causes acute pain. The pain often subsides upon rest, but returns after a use such as standing, walking, or bending. Even sitting a certain way can cause pain. When the pain is acute, the patient needs the help of a spinal surgery specialist. A growing treatment for bulging discs is an arthroscopic laser discectomy. This is a special surgical procedure that is less invasive than traditional open back surgeries. This type of surgery is done using a small incision into which an endoscopic tube is inserted. This instrument removes the problematic disc material and then the laser gets rid of any surrounding problem areas.

This type of treatment for a bulging disc is fairly new. The patient has a much shorter recovery time than he or she would from traditional back surgery. The ...

LEARN ABOUT BACK PAIN  by

 Steve Madigan
4/24/2008 at 11:14
The second most common neurological problem in the United States is back pain. The most common is headache.

Most of the time back pain is caused by a minor fall or lifting a heavy object. What you suffer is actually a muscle pull or ligament strain. These types of injuries cause pain that lasts only a few days.

Anti inflammatory medicine will sometimes give you relief. Ibuprofen is a popular type of pain reliever used for this purpose. You should also consider treatment by using ice and rest. Over the next 5 to 7 days your pain should improve. Back pain is not only related to adults. In fact, 10 to 40 percent of teenagers experience some form of this pain as well. Pain relief for teenagers and adults should be similar.

Muscle fatigue and low back pain can often be very debilitating, insidious with its gradual onset or even arbitrary when a sudden occurrence happens and there is no obvious precipitating event. The back is a very complex anatomical structure so it is difficult to diagnose. Made up of bone, ligaments, muscle, tendons and a major network of neurological components.

Pain in the back is widespread in all countries. Even with this widespread problem, the knowledge and the medical advances we have on this, we are uncertain as to many of the causes of lower back pain. Pain in the low part of the back and muscle fatigue are not a diagnosis but a symptom of an underlying problem. In fact, there may ...

HOW TO EASE BACK PAIN  by

 James Penn
4/24/2008 at 11:14
Recognizing the Problem:

We are spending too much time sitting at desks, or standing at work. Our backs were not designed for modern life! But here we are; achy, stiff backs. I remember one project I worked on, the lovely woman sitting next to me kept quietly moaning to herself in pain. I sent her home with my favorite tape and next morning she was smiling! Over the last six years, I have repeated this scenario more times, with more people, than I can count. It only takes once to experience the difference. No drugs involved, but it sure is habit forming!

An Alternative:

So, what is the magic on the tape? Suspend judgement for a moment. It is yoga, but not like the yoga you may have seen or heard horror stories about.

A little background. I first became interested in yoga in the late 60’s. However, I felt that what I was seeing wasn’t what I was looking for. Twenty years later I met one of the leading yoga instructors from Australia. She had studied extensively in the Far East and at that point had been teaching yoga for 40 years. Even though she was in her 60’ she moved with the lightness and grace of a young ballet dancer. She was perfectly ageless. She confirmed what I had suspected. This twist-into- -a-pretzel, contortionistic, competitive, painful "yoga" was not what she knew as yoga either. Yoga is about relaxing muscles, not stressing them out in some ego driven competition. If you enjoy ...

LOWER BACK PAIN AND HIP PAIN CAUSES  by

 Steve Madigan
4/24/2008 at 11:13
During a person’s lifetime one thing that is common is that people will suffer from lower back pain. Most of the time the cause of low back pain is a bump or even an accident. When this happens it is usually a mild case and treatment is usually easy.

Others will find they have back pain and don’t know what caused the pain and there is no way to control the occurrence of the pain. Spinal conditions are a reason for back pain and many are born with this condition. The sooner you can find the source of the pain, the sooner you and your doctor can treat that back pain and hopefully reduce or eliminate the back pain for good.

Things to consider for the Under 60 population As we all know age can play a role in the causes of low back pain. Older people are usually grouped into a separate category. The reason for this is they sometimes are prone to degenerative conditions, like arthritis.

If you are under sixty years old with back pain there are 3 main categories that you may fall into. These are grouped by common symptoms:

Herniated Discs - Numbness and pain that shoots down the legs from the low back. Pain increases with long periods of sitting or standing. Degenerative Disc Disease - Making certain moves and being in specific positions can cause the onset of back pain. This pain can become chronic and extremely painful. Stress Fractures - Can be very painful and caused ...

RECEIVE EFFECTIVE HERNIATED DISC RELIEF  by

 Verona Raymond
4/24/2008 at 11:12
There certainly are a lot of different things that can go wrong with us as individuals. None of us are infallible and we may have problems that range from those that are fairly simple to those that can be life changing. A very common problem that people have to deal with is a herniated disc.

The human body is a very complex thing and the individual parts of our body have their own complexities as well. The spine is a good example of a complex part of the human body. Although it has a lot of different moving parts, it is basically made of a series of vertebrae that are cushioned. These cushions help to keep the vertebrae from rubbing against each other and also protect the nerves that are so prevalent in the spinal area. This cushion is actually the disc that becomes herniated whenever we have a spinal problem.

There are several different reasons why you may be experiencing a herniated disc. As we get older, our body begins a slow deterioration that we may not be aware of whenever we are younger. This deterioration affects all areas of our body, including the discs that exist between the vertebrae in our spine. They begin a gradual breakdown that often occurs even before a person is 30 years of age. The disc itself becomes less elastic and more prone to damage from overuse or impact of some sort.

The disc itself can actually bulge or rupture and if this occurs, it can ...

BACK PAIN - METHODS OF MEDICATION  by

 Thomas Zoellner
4/24/2008 at 11:12
If your back is injured then you can expect to have back pain for some time afterward; some medications can provide back pain relief in the short term, although none currently exist that remove pain completely. Pain relief is possible with the medications available but that is all they do and the reason for the pain continues. While there are a host of prescription medications that help with pain relief, many are doing nothing more than masking the symptoms instead of tackling the underlying cause of the pain. Any type of medication should only be used with the supervision of a doctor but especially when it is taken on a regular basis.

The back is under a constant strain throughout our lives and whilst it is very strong, it can be injured without to much difficulty; once spinal injury has occurred it can be a permanent condition. The most common way to injure your back though is by lifting badly, it is usually recognized immediately by a sharp pain at the base of the spine. More recently people are willing to try natural back pain relief treatments to stop their reliance on other types of medication.

Stretching can be effective at reducing back as it relaxes the muscles which are often tense. Reflexology, an ancient type of alternative medical treatment, uses the concept that areas of the body have corresponding regions on the feet that can benefit from massage; some people are now discovering its benefits as a back pain remedy. Often to ...

RECOVERING FROM BACK PAIN  by

 Adam Rostocki
4/24/2008 at 11:11
Recovering from back pain is a real challenge for patients whose lives are literally taken over by their tormenting conditions. After years of suffering and seemingly endless unsuccessful attempts at treatment, many patients simply become resolved to a fate of continuing agony. In order to recover, it is crucial for any back pain patient to never give up on the goal of permanently ending their pain.

Back pain has a reputation as a chronic and treatment resistant health concern. The back pain industry is a multi-billion dollar medical specialty which is growing by leaps and bounds every year. However, there are few medical, complementary or alternative therapy options which really work well to cure back pain. Symptomatic treatment is the typical regimen offered and when this fails, surgery is usually prescribed as a last resort option.

Back pain patients commonly endure an endless procession of tests and treatments. They are manipulated, injected, adjusted, exercised and drugged, but rarely enjoy any lasting relief. Why is back pain such a troublesome condition to cure? The answer to this question is deceptively simple. The condition is not difficult to heal, but it is sometimes very difficult to accurately diagnose...

Back pain is most often blamed on some form of spinal trauma or degenerative process. Doctors diagnose hundreds of individual pain syndromes which are supposedly caused by a structural abnormality in the spine or back muscles. However, the vast majority of these irregularities are normally found amongst the general population and typically do not produce any pain ...

MEDICATION FOR YOUR BACK PAIN, KNOW WHAT YOU TAKE  by

 Richard Collins
4/24/2008 at 11:11
If you suffer from back pain the one thing you want as quick as possible is pain relief. The level of pain felt will vary between persons, it all depends on the pain tolerance a person has but also on what the cause of the back pain is. Most often you can treat the pain with medication like naproxen or ibuprofen. These are so called non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs. One of the biggest problems with these NSAIDs is that you can get potential side effects like increased risk of heart attack or stroke and/or gastrointestinal bleeding.

When you’re looking for medication witch don’t have these side effects maybe COX-2 inhibitors are an option. At this moment they haven’t shown any negative side effects on the gastrointestinal system. Testing, however, is still continuing because the long term safety still has to be determined. Long term usage of non-sterodial anti-inflammatory drugs can have the increasing potential of gastrointestinal and/or kidney damage. The verdict on COX-2 is still out until the research on long term use is done and the effects are known to us.

Although most of the over the counter drugs don’t have the same strength as NAIDs, Acetaminophen has shown some successes as pain medication when it comes to reducing the discomfort of having a back pain, and this all without having the many side effects NIADs have. When muscle spasm is the main cause of the pain there are only a few options in pain medications that can reduce the pain.

Drowsiness is ...

BACK PAIN - CAUSES AND REMEDIES EXPLAINED  by

 Nic Marin
4/24/2008 at 11:11
Once an injury to the spine has occurred, regular, often persistent back pain can follow; proprietary medication is often the first route to back pain relief; Pain relief is possible with the medications available but that is all they do and the reason for the pain continues. Medication should be used sparingly and under the strict supervision of a medical professional.

The back is under a constant strain throughout our lives and whilst it is very strong, it can be injured without to much difficulty; poor posture can also result in damage to the back and can happen when a person is quite young. Of course the most common way to injure your spine is by lifting heavy weights or lifting them incorrectly. though, a number of back pain relief treatments can be used without the need for drugs.

One of the simplest but also underused remedies is just the act of stretching which can bring relief to tense muscles as well. Another type of treatment called reflexology uses a massage technique applied to the feet; some are finding relief using this treatment for back pain and other conditions. Often to compensate for our pain, the back muscles over compensate. Reflexology can help provide relief by improving the circulation which in turn relaxes these hard worked muscles.

Acupuncture is used frequently by people suffering spinal agony by giving them back pain relief just as it has for thousands of years, although, only recently in the West. The Chinese believe we all have this ...

HOW MUCH DO MY DAILY ACTIVITIES CREATE THE PAIN?  by

 Dr. Philip Cordova
4/24/2008 at 11:09
Uh oh, it’s happened again. You can feel the initial "twinge." That is, you can feel the early warning sign that you low back pain problem is about to come back again. You knew you should have been keeping up with your chiropractic visits and the exercises your doctor gave you, but you just haven’t done it.

You feel great most of the time, but you’ve learned that when you get this feeling, things are about to go downhill...fast. Sometimes you get off easy, just a few over-the-counter remedies and you can get back to work. Sometimes you’re going to be spending the weekend putting ice on your back and waiting for the doctor to open up first thing Monday morning.

Worse case is that you’ll spend the next couple of weeks trying to get yourself back to feeling not just pain-free, but to the point where you don’t feel like things are about to go bad at any point. That’s the worse feeling.

So it’s somewhere in one of these episodes that you begin to ask yourself, "Why does this keep happening? Is it something I’m doing or not doing?" Most of the time, the answer is "yes!" Now, our bodies are not made out of concrete, and no one can make sure that your back pain will never, ever return again. However, there’s plenty that you can do to keep the episodes at bay and keep from feeling bad more often than not.

Let’s not even get into some of the preventative ...

HOW TO AVOID LOWER BACK PAIN  by

 Karen Vertigan Pope
4/24/2008 at 11:09
What is it? It is pain or stiffness in the small of the back. It may also be accompanied by pain in the buttocks or the legs. Many times simple exercises and good posture will help ease most back pain. Sometimes physical therapy, medication or even surgery may be needed.

It is always best to avoid back pain to begin with rather than having to find a way to ease it later.

Here are a few suggestions:

Standing

* If you have to stand in one place for long periods of time, rest one foot on a low stool. If you are at home and working in the kitchen, open the lower cabinet and rest a foot on the inside edge of the lower cabinet. Change feet every five to fifteen minutes.

* Also, it is important to maintain good standing posture. Hold your head up, shoulders straight, chest forward and your weight balanced evenly on both feet.

Sitting

* Make certain your chair has good lower back support. The back of the chair should be curved where the small of the back meets the back of the seat.

* Keep your knees higher than you hips by using a foot rest or stool.

* Don’t twist at the waist while sitting. Twist your entire body.

Sleeping

* Sleep on your side with your knees slightly bent. You can put a pillow between your knees.

RELAXING BACK PAIN WITH NATURE’S HELP  by

 Tariq Ansari
4/24/2008 at 11:08
Back pain may be the result of injury, or disease such as arthritis, spinal stenosis, or fibromyalgia. Degeneration, herniation, or rupture of the discs between vertebrae, and poor spinal alignment can trigger back pain, too.

Sometimes X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs, and blood tests fail to pinpoint the precise cause of the pain, especially if it relates to strained muscles resulting from strenuous activity.

Doctors characterize back pain in one of two ways: acute or chronic. The more common, acute back pain typically lasts not more than six to eight weeks and involves a sudden, intermittent, stinging pain in a localized area of the back. More serious, chronic back pain can continue for months and usually affects the lower area of the back and sometimes the legs.

Are there natural cures for back pain?

Yes. Among the many beneficial natural remedies which aid in treating back pain are:

GARLIC OIL used for massage. To utilize it most effectively: Put ten small pieces of garlic in a pan, add coconut, sesame or mustard oil, and fry the garlic pieces over a low flame until brown. Let cool, then strain, and massage the oil mixture onto the back, leaving it for three or four hours before rinsing.

HERBAL TEAS such as chamomile, St. John’s wort, borage, lemon balm, and valerian are known to have a calming effect on strained muscles as well. Drink one to two cups of tea containing any of these herbs on a daily basis for maximum results.

HEATING PADS AND ICE PACKS, applied alternately to the ...

PREVENT AND END BACK PAIN ONCE AND FORALL  by

Pain in the lower back is almost always caused by some sort of injury/accident. Just about everybody experiences some kind of back pain over their lifetime, but most of the time it occurs between the ages of 30 and 55. There are several key things you can do to speed up the recovery from your lower back pain including swimming, walking and stretch exercises. They all build muscle which is an essential factor that is necessary to extinguish the whole lower back problem. The way you sleep, sit, stand all affect how your back feels. No matter how you came to arrive with your back problems, hereditary issues, poor posture, trauma, or whatever the case may be the simple fact remains, the lower back pain can interfere with a persons whole life.

PREVENTION

Standing upright is a HUGE factor weighing on how your lower back feels. You should always be standing up straight with your chest poked out forward. Keeping your shoulders straight while keeping your head up is also a very important thing to remember. It is just as important to tuck your hips into the center of your body, and always remember to distribute your body weight evenly on your feet. You need to always change positions while standing for an extended period of time. One thing that has yet to fail me is to rest one foot on a chair or stool for a little while, this helps your back by making it work a lot less harder.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND TREATMENTS OF LOWER BACK PAIN?  by

 Mei Jiang
4/24/2008 at 11:07
Most people will suffer lower back pain in a certain period time of their life, especially when they are getting older. Sometimes lower back pain caused by an injury, while others have no obvious reason.

What conditions cause lower back pain?

Here are several major conditions could lead to back pain. Muscle Strain around the lower back area, which could be caused by injury; Herniated Discs, which is the discs that support the back bone are dislocated and causes numbness and pain that shoots down the legs from the low back; Degenerative Disc Disease, which could causes similar symptoms and could be chronic; Osteoarthritis, which destroys the spine joints or other joints around lower back area and could result in Stress Fractures or Pathologic Fracture.

There are some lesser known conditions for lower back pain: spinal cord tumor; spinal cord infection; Fibromygalia Sacroiliac joint syndrome; Piriformis syndrome; Sciatica Poly neuropathy; and other spinal conditions.

As the spinal nerves emerge from the spinal cord which is located inside the back bone, they travel laterally 1-2 cms before they exit the spine. It is at this exit that these nerves are most likely compressed. Most of the above conditions could cause the compression. This pressure on the spinal nerves causes inflammation and pain. The pain could affect the back alone or can irradiate to the legs.

Non-surgical treatment of lower back pain

Non-surgical treatment of lower back pain involves medication treatment, therapeutic spinal traction, spinal bracing, chiropractic care, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medication treatment, epidural steroid injection, nerve ...
